1:06 pm: After negotiating with his fellow Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives, Republican House leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) failed to get enough votes in the 7th ballot for Speaker of the House. Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz voted for former president Donald Trump as Speaker of the House.
3:20pm: Vote attempt #8: Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) failed again to become Speaker of the House.
6pm: The ballot number has gone into the double digits. Kevin McCarthy has failed to get enough votes in 10 straight ballots. For the first time since before the civil war has the house gone over 9 ballots to pick the Speaker of the House.
8:10pm The House of Representatives adjourned for the night after an 11th ballot proved no closer for the Republicans to elect a Speaker of the House with 20 lone hard-lined Republicans fighting his nomination.
