East Palestine, OH.: A National Transportation Safety Board preliminary report for the train derailment said the train’s crew was alerted that the axle was overheating just before the derailment. An engineer slowed the train and stopped the train after getting a “critical audible alarm message.” 115,580 gallons of toxic vinyl chloride are still in several cars, and they are at risk of exploding. In 1 of those train cars, the internal temperature is still rising.
