Washington, D.C.: Republican house leader Kevin McCarthy gained 12 votes but still lost on the 12th ballot for Speaker of the House. McCarthy negotiated with the hardline holdouts to get 12 more votes, but alas no Speaker of the House yet and the House of Representatives can not do any business until the Speaker is not in office.
Updated at 11:39pm: Kevin McCarthy failed on a 14th ballot to become Speaker of the House, because several hardline members are refusing to vote for him even though he made deep concessions.
