The U.S. Supreme Court has ordered the state of Alabama to redraw the state’s congressional map by upholding the Voting Rights Act. The move would allow an additional Black majority district to account for Alabama being 27% Black. The conservative court afforded additional opportunities for minority voters to elect the candidate of their choice. The vote was 5-4 as Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh joined the liberals in the voting.
