Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel will “take mighty vengeance” for the Palestinian attack on the country. Israel’s security cabinet has officially declared a state of war. A government statement said that the war “was forced on the State of Israel in a murderous terrorist assault from the Gaza Strip.”
10:20am: U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that U.S. officials are trying to verify reports that several Americans have been killed in the attacks.
11:40am: Israeli officials have estimated the attacks killed almost 600 Israelis and at least 370 Palestinians, and the Israeli military is still fighting the gunmen.
5pm: Senior officials of the militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah claim that Iran’s security officials met in Beirut, Lebanon on Monday to help plan Hamas’s attack on Israel. The Iranian officials gave the green light for the assault.
