Tel Aviv, Isr.: Israel said that the country was “prepared for war” after Palestinian militants attacked Israel with the biggest attack in years on the country. The Palestinian fighters went over the border and fired rockets into Israel.

5:30am: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel was at war with Hamas, the Gaza militant group, after the earlier surprise attack. Israel ordered a call-up of reservists. Netanyahu said that Hamas would “pay a price that it hasn’t known until now,” saying: “We are at war. Not an ‘operation,’ not a ’round,’ but at war.”

6am: Israel’s military said that the country was attacked by at least 2,200 rockets.

9am: Israel’s emergency service said at least 40 people were killed, and the Israeli Health Ministry said over 700 people have been wounded in the attack by Hamas.

11:20am: Israeli Defense Forces spokesperson, Brig. Gen. Daniel Hagari said that Hamas as taken hostages and prisoners of war. In his remarks Hagari said, “There are hostages and prisoners of war that Hamas took. There are also deaths among IDF soldiers. We don’t have an exact number yet – we are at war.”

1pm: Almost 300 people have been killed in Gaza & Israel. The Israeli military said that militants had entered at least 22 Israeli towns, and have abducted soldiers and civilians. Israeli fighter jets had begun striking Hamas targets in Gaza.

1:20pm: Hamas announced that the attacks are only the beginning of a long battle. An adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said Iran supported the assault by Hamas militants.

3:10pm: U.S. President Joe Biden has condemned the “appalling assault” by Hamas. Biden said , “Terrorism is never justified. Israel has a right to defend itself and its people.”
